What is Cold Laser Therapy?

Cold Laser Therapy is a non-surgical, non-drug approach to treating many conditions. In addition to simple back and neck pain, cold laser therapy has been utilized for a number of both acute and chronic conditions such as arthritis, tendonitis, sprains/strains, carpal tunnel syndrome, wound management, hip and knee pain, shoulder and neck injuries, muscle and joint pain, as well as a long list of others.

Cold lasers emit visible coherent light that is focused on injured areas. Studies show that cold laser therapy increases energy production at the cellular level. This energy increases microcirculation which reduces inflammation and enhances tissue healing within the injured areas.

How do they work?

Healing is a cellular process and light energy initiates a cascade of reactions, from the cell membrane to the cytoplasm, to the nucleus and DNA. There are many biological processes that take place in tissues that have been shown to respond to the cold laser therapy. The overall effects of the cold laser therapy site are decreased pain and decreased inflammation, as well as increased range of motion

Because the cold laser emits a low level of power output and its beam penetration is deep, it has been proven to significantly accelerate and enhance the bodies natural defense and ability to repair itself when injured. Initially, swollen tissue prevents movement of damage tissue.

How Long Does the Repair Process Take?

When the body has an injury the cells are damaged, they do not function within their normal parameters. When a cold laser is applied to the injured area, it sends a stimulated light of a special wavelength deep into the affected area. The Laser penetrates at least 2-4 inches deep and signals your damaged cells to start producing more energy. This produces a flow of healing responses in your body, reducing inflammation and thereby reducing or eliminating your pain. Sessions take only a few minutes; however the therapeutic effect will continue to work for you long after you leave the office.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Does it hurt? How does it feel?

There is little or no sensation during cold laser therapy . Occasionally one feels a mild, soothing warmth or tingling.

Are there any side effects or associated risks?

During the 20 years of healthcare provides all over the world, very few side effects have been reported. If a patient is allergic to light then they may get a rash or blister for a few days. Occasionally some old injuries or pain syndromes may feel aggravated for a few days, as the healing response is more active after cold laser therapy.

How long does each session take?

The typical cold laser therapy duration is 5-10 minutes depending on the size of the area being receiving the cold laser therapy and the severity.

How often should the patient recieve cold laser therapy?

Acute conditions may receive cold laser therapy daily, particularly if they are accompanied by significant pain. More chronic problems respond better when cold laser therapy are received 2-3 times a week tapering off to once a week or once every other week, with improvement.

How many sessions does it take?

This depends on the nature of the condition receiving cold laser therapy. For some acute conditions, 1-6 sessions may suffice. Those of a more chronic nature may require 10-15 (or more) sessions.

How long before the results are felt?

You may feel improvement in your condition (usually pain reduction) after the very first session. Sometimes you will not feel improvement for a number of sessions. This does not mean that nothing is happening. Each session is cumulative and results are often felt after 3-4 sessions.

Incredible Testimonials

See what some of our patients have to say about their experience with the cold laser!

"I have had pain in my knee and restriction of movement for more than a year. I visited an orthopedic who advised me that he could inject steroids into my knee or I could undergo surgery to have the problem area removed or stitched up. Instead I decided to seek help from Dr. Natalie Lawrence. I did some research on the Cold Laser treatment that she offers and although I was skeptical, I determined it wouldn't hurt or make my condition any worse. After only one adjustment and treatment with the cold laser, I experienced range of movement that I haven't had for over a year. I was shocked the following morning when I woke up and the pain in my knee was minimal - after ONE treatment!"

- Cathy L.

"After falling on my left knee five months ago it has been very painful. After the cold laser treatment it feels AMAZING! No sharp burning pain. I feel like I can run again and not worry about it."

- Robin R.

"WOW! Thanks Doc! I work in the HVAC business with a lot of lifting, stairs, ladders and even crawling. One of my fears turning 41 this year is my body breaking down after 20 plus years of this career. Regular back maintenance has kept me safe. Then came the morning when I stood from bed to have my knee "give out." A very scary feeling! A few days later, dealing with a very sore, tired knee I called Dr. Lawrence and told her my symptoms. With ONE cold laser treatment my ole' tired knee felt new again! Two days later completely gone!"
